Job Title Workplace Survey
CBP Inspector I have been employed with the U.S. Customs Service/U.S. Bureau of Customs & Border Protection since March, 1978 to the present. I have held five different positions since the beginning of my employment. I have worked at six different geographic locations of my choice. Career advancement is based upon time in grade, experience, education and, most important, who you know. You can be the best at your position, but if you do not have someone to pull for you, you will not be promoted. There are exceptions to this rule, but it is not a common occurance. There is a wide diversity of positions available within our agency, which has recently expanded due to the Department of Homeland Security reorganization. Although we are viewed primarily as a law enforcement agency, the majority of our positions are not uniformed. Our hours of operation can be 24/7 in a uniformed position, or within one of our other enforcement positions. Otherwise, flex-time hours are available at most offices. We still have a very liberal leave benefit, whereby an employee earns a fixed number of hours every pay period (twenty six per year). The Sick Leave hours are only four per pay period, but the Annual (vacation) Leave advances after you serve a certain number of years. Our other benefits, such as medical and life insurance, have declined in recent years. These benefits are not as valuable as in previous years. Our dress code is dependant on the type of position that one serves in. Our uniformed positions have no personal options from that which has been agreed upon nationally. Otherwise, business attire is expected in an office/public work environment. Casual Fridays are also allowed within reason. Our agency maintains a very strict business code of conduct that is detailed in our Table of Offenses and Penalties guide. All infractions are detailed, as well as potential punishment. We have a very diverse workforce, comprised of all ages, races, ethnicities, etc. We are protected by the Equal Employment Act. The only age restrictions apply to our law enforcement positions. This does not apply to the CBP Officer position, or the CBP Agriculture Specialist positions.
