Job Title Salary Survey
General Engineer Pay/benefits SUCK. There is almost no limit to how badly they SUCK. Cost of living increases have not kept pace, resulting in wages for me ($63,000 after 21 years), only slightly over my county's poverty line ($52,000), on which to support my ailing wife and myself. This is 51% less than if someone with the same job and length of service working in the private sector. Promotions come only every 3 to 10 years, if there is an opening. The starting salary was $17,383 so I guess I am doing a little better. There are no awards, no stock options, no year-end bonuses and vacation is earned at a rate of 4 hours biweekly. After 5 years, they increase it to 6 hours biweekly, and after 10 years to the maximum of 8 hours biweekly. Sick leave is accrued at 2 hours biweekly. They recently granted us the ability to take Family Sick leave, which is charged against our sick leave.
