The Army is a large organization and experiences differ, but there are
certain common themes one can expect everywhere.
First, the Army revolves around combat arms. That is good, because
combat is the Army's core competency. This can be troubling for those
in auxiliary positions, such as logistics. While automation functions,
logistics coordination, and administrative tasks are critical and
difficult functions, a logistics operator can expect to be 1) graded on
more operational (combat) qualities and 2) have his/her logistics
successes downplayed.
Common points of evaluation for all personnel include physical fitness,
personnel led, dollars managed, and training performed. While these
could be assigned to logistics tasks, the Army is organized and led
with combat arms in mind. That means that efficient operation of 50
soldiers and a $30 million dollar warehouse will not be looked upon as
favorably by senior leadership as a solid training event performed by
an Infantry officer and a 30 person infantry unit.
This might not be a problem, but in moving up th command chain, one may
find it more and more difficult to enjoy and improve upon non-combat or
non-command functions.
