I started here in October of 1983. The dress code then was shirt and
tie, jacket optional. I am somewhat of a radical since 1990, in that I
wear black jeans, and a collarless shirt. "If im going to be stuck in a
converted warehouse, I might as well dress comfortably." Ours is a
diverse culture, with most groups represented. As an example, where
else could you find a Muslim, a Hindu and a Jew putting up a Christmas/
Yule tree? The Hours are strange, in that everyone must be in by 9:00
AM, with a half hour for lunch, and 8 1/2 Hour minimum day. But, they
are also flexable, if you care to set up that option. The opportunity
for advancement and pay/benefits however SUCK. There is a non-portable
retirement plan, which is not part of Social Security. You can't
collect Social Security if you retire, even if you worked under Social
Security before you started here. You cannot qualify for Federal
Disability Retirement. Your Health benefits are negotiated on a Federal
level, so State mandated minimum coverage levels do not apply. Cost of
living increases have not kept pace, resulting in wages for me ($63,000
after 21 years), only slightly over my county's poverty line ($52,000),
on which to support my ailing wife and myself. This is 51% less than if
someone with the same job and length of service working in the private
sector. Promotions come only every 3 to 10 years, if there is an
opening.
