UPS can be a difficult company to work for, especially for hourly workers
like myself. There is a huge management v. hourly rift. It's like being
in the military- very regimented, work by the rules, no fair having fun.
Interviewing for management is very detailed, many profiles are
compiled. Be aware that management people can be transferred anywhere at
any time, that is the reason I chose not to persue a higher position. My
positions require employer supplied uniforms, but management wear mainly
suits, except on casual-dress Fridays. There is a corporate policy
(probably unwritten) of keeping employees out of the loop. Company
changes in poliices are just implemented w/out hourlies knowing anything
in advance, so there is a certain amount of mistrust of management by
hourlies. The company is diverse and makes great strides to promote
minorities in management. The two biggest issues I have after having
worked at UPS for 15 years are: the company will spend $100 to save a
nickel; and in spite of the policy of being up on safety regulations- I
find that there are alot of unsafe conditions which remain, even after
being brought to the attention of management. Everything conforms from
building to building: right down to the paint used inside. Individuality
is not encouraged! The hours are 24/5 at most facilities; however
some of the larger hubs operate more hours if they are dealing w/ our
aircraft. I would say that UPS is a pretty good company to work for- if
you can tolerate that someone is always looking over your back and always
watching you. I have no idea what the compensation or benefits are for
management, but I do know they are paid only monthly. Hope this is
helpful.
