The base salary for a newly hired dispatcher is $4100 mo. After a year it will
increase to $4600 mo. Raises and bonuses are then given annually in March. The
amount of raise and bonus depends upon which region you are assigned (outside of
your control), and your previous years safety, attendance and performance
record.
Raises are between 2 and 5 percent and bonuses are from $1000 to $4000. Only a
few people are at the upper end of the range. Stock options are very rare at
this
level in the company. The company sponsored health care costs have gone up
tremendously year after year. In my opinion, they have done little to improve
the
quality or costs of the service. The vacation package for Train dispatchers is
not very appealing for the first several years. Two weeks per year are earned
until a person has five years of service with the company, then three weeks of
vacation are earned. Only a couple of people can be on vacation at the same time
in any assigned zone. Vacation is granted by seniority, so it takes a few years
to get the popular times off. If someone is able to get vacation on a holiday,
they receive an extra day of vacation for the holiday. If someone has to work on
a holiday, nothing is given in return. When starting out, plan on working every
holiday for the first several years, including Thanksgiving and Christmas. The
Dispatching center is staffed during every holiday. The salary is not just for
the work, but for the lack of time you will have to spend with your family,
friends or pursuing outside interests.
