You have a 30 minute overview session which then leads into interviews
individually with 5 different people. It ends with a 30 minute
discussion with someone within the MDSC. Two of my five interviewers
were tougher than the others. They seemed very focused on grades and in
intimidating me. One of the guys, that I was first impressed with
because I was surprised to see that someone that was a minority was A)
working for the railroad and B) in a high level position. I thought that
he would be someone that I would look up too and feel comfortable
learning from, but when the interview started...he continued to say "and
then what...and then what would you do ..." I understand if he
was "peeling the onion", however he was cocky and seemed disinterested
in me. In the middle of me explaining my answers he shook his head and
looked disappointed in reading my resume and information he was
provided. He even called someone in the middle of my interview and took
calls. When I handed him a "career comparision" about how my past
experiences would relate to the position, he tossed it back at me and
said, "I've already made my decision after the 2nd question". Next, he
told me to never put my political affiliation on my resume....I had
WORKED for a political party and INTERNED for a state Senator. I looked
at him and thanked him for his advice, even though I was thinking, "what
idiot allowed this man to interview people?" I was stunned that such
a "great" company would have him working there. Amazingly enough I made
it to the next round. To back up and give a brief history, over 100
people applied, 46 got phone interviews, and 20 got face-to-face (that
would be my weird experience) and 6 got to go to the corporate office to
interview with 3 V.P.'s. When I interviewed with the V.P.'s they seemed
disinterested in the interview, and like they had their own agenda. I
had one guy ask me if I was done asking him questions. It was like they
were lazy and wanted to get home for the day or better yet, go golfing.
The real kicker was that after my face-to-face I had rave reviews and
feedback, but I think the V.P.'s were looking for someone more boring
like them. I suppose I didn't fit the profile. No harm done. At least I
won't have to work for the "and then what...and then what..." guy.
Good luck to all you applying. If you are not boring, don't waste your
time.
