UP has a bright future if it can get its operations in hand. Revenues
have continued to grow over the past year which caught UP shorthanded on
train crews and locomotives. They have worked hard to fix those
problems and the next issue will be working through capacity issues in
certain key corridors.
UP manages its business by budget, which can cause a lot of
inefficiences and extra spending in the long run. If it could take a
step back and look at the best way to do something (regardless of how it
is budgeted), then UP could really excel.
With the aging workforce, UP will need to promote and train people
quickly. The best thing would be to allow time before someone retires
for some cross training, but with the extremely budget conscious
management, this will probably not be allowed.
