The laid-back, collegial culture at Ulmer & Berne is probably it's
biggest strength. The attorneys at the firm generally appear to like
each other, and the partners take an active interest in not only the
asssociates' development but also their personal well-being. Feedback on
a job well done comes frequently (when, of course, the job is well done),
and evaluations and estimates of partnership potential are given
regularly and with enough detail to satisfy nearly everyone. There is a
very small handful of difficult partners, but that handful is MUCH
smaller than at firms of comparable size, as I can attest from my own
personal experience at a prior firm.
Diversity had historically been somewhat lacking, but that is changing
very fast in a positive way. The number of female and minority partners
is increasing, and there is even a small handful of openly gay attorneys
at the firm, including one partner, a rarity in Ohio.
Hours are reasonable; associates are expected to bill 1900 hours per year
and receive a $5,000 bonus for achieving 2000 hours. A discretionary
bonus of up to $5,000 is also available; in my experience, this
discretionary bonus is usually in the range of $3,000.
Dress code is casual five days a week, though attorneys are expected to
have appropriate attire within grabbind distance should the inevitable
telephone call come from a judge's chambers that one's presence is
expected post haste (or, worse, was expected five minutes ago).
