In investment banking, candidates from "non-target" schools compete for
seats in the summer associate class first through interviews with
the "Non-target Team Captain" or one of his teammates before mid
December. Next, phone interviews are used refine opinions or learn more
about her technical skills, for example. From this list, anywhere from
20 to 40 (depending on economic need) students are invited for a Super
Day in mid to late January. The Super Day starts with the candidates
sharing lunch with current associates. There is usually a speaker for
part of the time. After lunch, the bankers conduct interviews. There
are three 30 minute rounds: technical, fit, and general. Most technical
sessions begin with, "What are the methods one can use to value a
company?" Then, "Walk me through a DCF." "What is a 5 year DCF most
sensitive to, in general." "Name some ways to get rid of cash on your
balance sheet." Fit sessions tend to focus on committment, motivation,
poise, etc. General will combine technical and fit. After the last
interview, the candidate is free to go.
Generally, the firm tries to shorten the time from interview to
decision. The process from phone interview to summer offer usually
takes only 2 weeks.
