Generally into more work life balance, and friendly culture, but also
depends like in most banks the team and department you are in.
There are some substandard employees who have been around for a long
time resulting from mergers and make mistakes and are not up to
standard, but meet annual performance appraisal.
Really depending on your department, as it is a Swiss bank, the culture
is not as aggressive as an American investment bank, and there is more
real team work collaboration.
If you previously worked in an American investment bank you may find
the Swiss culture very different, may be at a slower pace and can be a
bit frustrating at times, but on the other side the bank has a higher
employee morale, employees are more motivated.
The bank wants to achieve a larger market share in the United States
for sure.
It has a very reputable Wealth management /private client area in the
industry, and is aquiring a lot of small companies, to expand their
portfolio of clients.
The are still a lot of Painwebber and Union Switzerland people hanging
around from prior mergers.
UBS is loyal to its employees and even in bad times try not to over
fire, and then in good times over hire - to maintain a certain level of
employee morale and motivation in the firm.
UBS is apparently a high street bank open to the public in Switzerland,
and is not just an investment bank.
UBS is definitely in the top tier league of investment banks. I think
it is however, more humane than some of the more aggressive banks.
They want to retain staff as opposed to just pushing them and getting
the most out of them in the short term.
They also like to put you on loads of training courses and help you to
achieve your goals in the long term.
There are definitely a lot of opportunities in UBS.
Some staff members who have been with the firm for a few years complain
that the compensation is not to market rate, but I am not certain the
validity of this as with most jobs your increase is limited if you do
not progress or do not move departments or banks.
They have team building off-sites which are really good and fun (in
work time) not in your own weekend time.
In general, I would say UBS is a good place to work in and has a strong
Swiss culture - caring, life work balance.
UBS has also won a lot of awards for working mothers, diversity,
workplace etc ..................
