I don't think Towers Perrin's overall business outlook is positive. The
outsourcing line of business has had huge morale issues as jobs have
been eliminated and there's talk of moving jobs to India. Though the
company's health and welfare and pension practices seem to be strong,
much of their "strength" comes from repeat business -- many consultants
don't know how to sell work to new clients, so growth has stagnated.
Every two to three years, the company goes through some sort of
reorganization, as it just did again in early 2004. Company leaders
seem to think that by shuffling lines of business around, they'll get
the results they want. The problem is that it's never quite clear to
everyone else what those desired results are, and they waste time and
energy worrying about their jobs and their future with the company.
Until company leaders figure out how to run the business effectively
and promote the energy and commitment they need from employees to
succeed, it will not be a good place to work.
