Of all the employers I've worked for over the past twenty years,
Thompson Coburn LLP was the worst. Gossip between attorneys (among both
partners, associates and mixtures of the two) created cliques beginning
on the first day of work. Screaming partners are common; mentoring
opportunities are squandered in lieu of ego petting sessions. Turnover
is incredible with all the truly good and ethical legal practitioners
leaving not for greener pastures, but to relieve themselves of the
spying and back stabbing which occurs behind the curtain. Associate
advancement is reserved only for the back stabbers. Partners and
Associates have no problem stealing clients which more junior attorneys
develop in the name of "hierarchy." If you leave Thompson Coburn, watch
your back! Thompson Coburn attorneys have no problem calling all their
attorney friends in an attempt to black list exiting attorneys. If you
apply for a job after leaving Thompson Coburn, do NOT use a Thompson
Coburn attorney for a reference; upon my seeking an in-house position at
a large international corporation, several partners called the
prospective in-house employer and my current employer without my
permission. I learned from my current employer that the partners called
to warn of my "being disloyal" to the current employer. Of all my
peers, who have collective legal experience of about 100 years, they
have never heard of such unethical and disrespectful events at ANY other
law firm, not to mention at any other employer. Salaries are also among
the lowest in the mid-west and nation for comparable 300-attorney law
firms.
