Overall business outlook is bleak. Thompson Coburn is well known as the
low-cost shop in St. Louis. The firm also locked in 10 years at their
current downtown location and spent wildly on a 35th floor conference
facility. Because Thompson Coburn does NOT have a national presence,
and St. Louis' economy never saw the boom of the late 90's, this shop is
doomed to go the way of Brobeck and Altheimer. Who knows what the
senior partners are thinking when making half the salary of their peers
across the street. Thompson Coburn attorneys find it difficult to
attract new business outside St. Louis because the firm is simply
unknown outside the city. Mergers will be impossible because profitable
firms in other cities can ill-afford to bring in 300 attorneys who
mostly reside in a single city. Thompson Coburn is not profitable
enough to start additional satellite offices.
