Working for Texas Instruments was a unique and enjoyable experience for
me. I started working for them straight out of college and the company
was truly impressive from many perspectives. I was amazed the first
time I entered the main hallway at Forest Lane (corporate HQ) and
couldn't even see the end of it. I walked the length of it from time
to time just to remind myself of the size of the company... from one
end to the other would take me nearly 10 minutes. The culture is
friendly, albeit somewhat impersonal. You can only develop friendships
with a very few people and the general feeling one gets in a sea of
cubicles is not one of 'bliss'. TI certainly impressed me as a truly
intercultural company, with the halls swarming with nearly every
cultural background EXCEPT caucasion. The hours were reasonable with a
good balance of work and family life. It wasn't until going to work at
a branch office in California that this really came out of balance.
Then it was LONG days and seemingly selling your soul to the company.
In the sales force, there is little (if any) room for advancement.
This proved to be a point of frustration, but little consequence.
Being stationed in CA has its benefits where dress code is concerned.
Most of the clients are wearing shorts and sandals, so the
typical 'sales' suit is not required.
