Testa, Hurwitz & Thibeault is a wonderful firm if it makes it through
the difficulties it faces in the immediate future.
I chose THT because they are truly committed to creating a collaborative
environment where new attorneys can learn and flourish. The hallmark of
the THT culture is its open door policy. Every attorney no matter how
junior is welcome to approach any attorney no matter how senior with any
question at any time. This means that new attorneys spend less time
spinning their wheels trying to figure out what they are supposed to be
doing and it means better client service because attorneys spend less
time reinventing the wheel. In addition, new attorneys go through an
extensive training period on both the substantive law they will be
dealing with as well as the support services that are available to them
on a day to day basis.
In addition, here at THT they are serious about maintaining a culture
where there is no need to "put in face time". From day one, attorneys
are encouraged to go home at 5:00 if you can, and the work load is
generally reasonable, although, like all law firms, attorneys will
occasionally be required to put in long hours to complete the work a
client needs done. A new attorney should go into the experience
expecting to be at work until around 7:00 on average.
THT has been a wonderful place to start my career. However, as I said in
the beginning, THT is currently facing tough times. This has nothing to
do with the market. The market for corporate legal work, particularly
for start-up through mid-siz companies which is the bulk of THT's
practice, is rebounding nicely and THT had a very good year in 2004. The
problems THT faces are internal. Several partners have recently left the
firm for various reasons and the firm is in the process of assessing the
future. The troops are a bit skitish and management has done a poor job
of calming their fears.
So the bottom line is that THT has been a wonderful place to start a
legal career, but keep your ear to the ground because things could go
south pretty quickly.
