The first two years of employment were rather difficult. The
department I worked for (Chemistry) had a rather poor cultural health.
The management of that group carries a great burden of the sense that
they are overworked and underpaid, and they take it out on the members
of the group. Salaries of working level employees were held back so
that the managers would not make less money than those below them.
The department I am in now (Systems Engineering) has a far better
cultural health. It actually is almost like working for a different
company.
The only issue I see is that within 3- 5 years, TVA will be in a
serious predicament for experienced & knowledged employees. At Watts
Bar, there are approximately 100 New Employees who have greater than 15
years to retirement. The other 500 employees will be eligible for
retirement in 3 - 5 years. Currently, TVA is not hiring. This will
have a serious impact on the cultural health of the company at that
point.
TVA's current strategy for most departments is to hire one person for
every two who leave. The work load is already at peak levels, and can
only worsen when less experienced engineers are doing the work.
