Our hospital has been working with Tenet for the last 5 years or so and
has actually made the purchase which was finalized last December,
2003. Since that time, morale has sunk. People from the CEO on down
have left; some with suspicious reasons. People from other Tenet
facilities have been brought over. Many are afraid for their jobs
because Tenet is a for profit and we were not and therefore how
business is done is quite different. The capital budget has been
frozen, we have been running out of supplies, because of the bills not
having been paid, ordering basic supplies has been difficult.
Equipment is falling apart, new systems are not working, conference
rooms and education rooms are being taking over by the corporation. we
have to 'grow the business', where are the resources coming from for
that growth? This is a cancer hospital yet the nurses being hired do
not have any cancer experience. Corners have been cut, including with
orientation and education. the rules are inconsistent. People do not
feel free to offer opinions or make suggestions unless done
anonymously. Employee health benefits are lousy. Tenet has sold 19
hospitals in the LA area and yet we only get 80% coverage IF we go to a
Tenet facility. There are no facilities within a 45 minute drive. Our
hospital and the one across the street do not have emergency rooms. If
we use facilities/healthcare providers (even if Blue Cross providers)
near our home we are only reimbursed 60%. It remains to be seen how the
rest of the benefits will even out. Tenet does not have a good
reputation in the health care community. We have had several advanced
practice RN positions open but are not able to attract candidates
because of Tenet. With the change in systems, communication has been
limited at best. You have to depend on the grapevine to hear what has
happening in this facility. The electronic chart system is completely
inadequate and getting patient history takes so much time. We are
supposed to be going to a paperless system but it is taking more paper
and printing than ever before. We now have blocked computers where
many web sites are not accessible which is understandable, but it has
removed the access to some medical sites. I am no longer able to
receive email from profesional list serves. Our screen savers were
removed from our desk computers, now we just have black screens.
I can only say that my work environment has not improved nor even
maintained since the take-over.
Hours and dress code are appropriate. Opportunities for advancement
are few and far between here, there are a lot of people looking for
work because they don't know if their facility will be purchased and
their job maintained. The current CEO is bringing in her own people, or
the interns are being hired to fill positions once they graduate.
I am just using a 'wait and see' attitude.
