Back in the summer and fall of 2000, after I had completed my internship
with this local firm in Winnipeg, Manitoba. I was on the hunt for
work. I wanted to move to either the San Francisco Bay Area or South
Florida where all my friends and some family were located, so I went
down to both places and visited the offices of TekSystems, and other
consulting firms.
After coming home from both trips empty handed, I was back to working as
a dish washer for a restaurant until late November when I got a call
from TekSystems in Toronto. Turned out they only had a short term
weekend contract starting in December and it was for a client in my
hometown of Winnipeg.
Desperate for work, and not making much washing dishes on a weekend, I
accepted the contract, having to in the process quit my job at the
restaurant.
I cannot reveal the name of the client as I agreed with TekSystems on
the contract to keep annonymous.
I was working with a team of people, starting Friday evening around
5:00pm and we stopped at 3:30am. We returned back to work Saturday
morning at 9:00am and was up again until 3:00am, to complete the work in
two days rather than three days. The supervisor was impressed with the
way we all gave it our go, until the wee hours of the morning.
A group of us were setting up new servers all running IBM's OS/2, while
I and another gentleman were removing token ring cards from the
computers and installing and configuring ethernet cards. We also
installed some new printers and laptops to connect to the network.
It was a pretty laid back environment. The supervisor in charge there
even supplied us with sodas, donuts and other junk food. So our only
break was for supper, and for the smokers in the team to have their
nicotine fix to go with the coffee!!!
At the end of our work, all we had left was to fill in a time sheet and
fax it over to TekSystems. I received not only a good reward but also a
Christmas card from the recruiter. Even though the recruiter has moved
on, I still remin in touch with her.
