At one time I was involved in joint BBC TV programme and the college
where they wanted students who they would pay for their services in a
program. A problem arose and I became in trouble to which my line
manager and her manager told me it was on my head. In front of a few
staff members they said that they could not sack me and if they put on
enough pressure I would leave. I didn't.
On another occasions a staff member was off on long term sick with
Pneumonia her line manager would ring her two or three times a day and
on one occasion her line manager called one of her family members a liar
as the college did not believe this person was ill.
The attitude to staff by management was well you are just a number and
there are plenty of other people out there who would gladly leave
unemployment to take a position when they would be paid more than the
dole.
The principal came to the staff room in which I worked one Friday
afternoon and was talking openly about people and said about one senior
manager (a female) that she would never progress anywhere in the college
as she was not good looking enough and that if she was the only woman
left alive he would still not sleep with her.
The college made it clear the idea was get many names on registers apply
for money from the government and then it didn't matter if they did not
pass as long as the money was in the bank. If students didn't come to
class we had to mark them present for four weeks and if they did pass
(we had done the work for them) certificates would be destroyed or
shredded.
Being undervalued and working in a climate of uncertainty and bully
tactics, you either did the job quietly or left quietly.
I took them to a tribunal and was told by three solicitors that the
college was untouchable and they had the power to destroy my career. I
am not allowed on the college grounds now. In my new role sometimes I
been asked to go for meetings in the college and I am escorted to the
meeting room.
