This is a very difficult job with a lot of changing requirements that
provide a good deal of challenge to an employee. Because the work
requires a lot of decision making that children's physical, emotional
and psychological well being depend on decisions are extremely
critical. Administration at times fails to see what impact their
decision making causes to line workers and frequently must be
petitioned by workers to understand these impacts. Workers must also
juggle the needs of the court, the child, the parents, their attorneys,
Guardian ad Litems, schools, foster parents, and the needs of
adminstration to ensure both the safety of children and the liability
of the State. The state makes concerted efforts to ensure diversity is
encouraged and accounted for. The hours are for most jobs day time
hours but are flexible and alternate work weeks are available. Most
workers spend more than 40 hours to accomplish the work. Benefits are
quite good with excellent retirement, medical, dental and disability
benefits. Retirement benefits include a retirement benefit of 2% of
highest 2 years income for each year of employment. 3 retirement
systems exist with only numbers 2 and 3 available to new workers.
Contribution to numbers 2 and 3 are less than the previous system.
