| Oregon Department of Education |
As a state agency, the Oregon Department of Education has an uncertain
future. The public has written letters to various newspapers stating
their dissatisfaction with the education in Oregon. School districts
have also shared their concerns that the department is not necessary,
that they can govern their own federal funds and be held accountable
for any issues that arise in their schools. As a comparison, one could
look at the Washington, D.C. school district. Washington, D.C. is not
a state, and therefore they do not have a state department overlooking
the school districts. If anyone reads the newspapers or watches the
news on television, they will quickly find out the problems Washington,
D.C. is currently having, mainly mismanaged federal funds,
inappropriate spending of said funds and questions on why the school
districts are not getting the funds they were promised.
The union is currently negotiating our contract with Oregon's
governor. The morale of all state agencies have not been good since
the last legislative session when steps were frozen and numerous people
were dismissed. State employees are working the jobs that normally two
people would have conducted, they work long hours, have not received a
cost of living increase and have not received raises for these past two
years. If the union is able to negotiate with the legislature there
should be better opportunities for new hires, decreasing the amount of
work that current employees have and hopefully restoring the morale.
