The dress code is informal, and working hours are flexible, being
between 07H30 and 17H00, with a 1 hour lunch break. There are not many
opportunities for 'white males', as the affirmative action drive is
still very alive in South Africa. Even after 10 years under a
democratically elected government, I find that even adverts
specify 'AFFIRMATIVE ACTION CANDIDATES ONLY NEED APPLY' - talk about
discrimination.... Almost ALL companies that my resume has been sent to
in South Africa are returned with a 'SORRY, wrong colour' reply. I do
understand that being in the mainframe environment, does restrict the
availability of possitions available, but there are NO previously
dissadvantaged individuals qualified to do the job in my field, yet,
companies are prepared to wait for the 'correct' individual to appear.
Being in business in South Africa, post apartheid, means that you have
to be part of an organisation that primeraly says you have to get along
with all, accept all, and stand back to alow those others without
previous opportunities to move ahead. This window dressing is slowly
going to cause a colapse of the IT industry (actually most industries)
over the next few years. The qualified people are not in the correct
positions, and either leave the country (which I have considered), or
are just to happy to have an income that they will 'carry the others'.
I've 18 years of mainframe experience.
Enough of moaning about this now. I'm happy to have a family with a
wonderfull daughter.
