It's the best school I've ever taught at -- and I've been teaching for
over 20 years. Classes are small (approx. 18 - 20) with some even
smaller (5 - 8), so there is a real chance to get to know my students.
I am respected as a professional, and expected to behave and dress as a
professional. There is no "official" dress code for teachers, but we
dress fairly conservatively, most men wearing jacket and tie. Our
students are in school uniforms and there are very few behaviour
problems, so we get to spend most of our time doing what we love --
teaching! Our students are diverse and from around the world. Most of
them live in the city, some travelling by bus or car over an hour each
way. We also have a boarding program for students in middle & high
school. This is the only school that has provided me with my own
office, phone and laptop computer. There are plenty of supplies and we
are allowed to order for our departments. We are included as "major
stakeholders" in the Strategic Planning process. We have many
opportunities to express ourselves and plan for the future. I, as dept.
head, am included in the hiring process for my department. We are
encouraged to continue our education and participate in professional
growth experiences. There is definitely opportunity for advancement. We
work hard and often long past regular school hours (8:45 - 3:45). We
are expected to participate in extra-curricular activities and "the
life of the school", but we all do what we know and enjoy best. I plan
to remain here until I retire!
