Sprint is going through what they refer to as a Transformation. This
means they are merging the FON Group and the PCS Group together into
one Sprint. The company created this merger of the wire line group FON
and the wireless group PCS because they felt they needed to provide one
company appearance to all of the subscribers.
The PCS division did not fare well in the Transformation as the
management now comes from the Wire Line or FON group. These managers
are old line Telco folks who have been with the company since the early
days when they were a Mid-West telephone company. The product lines now
merged are totally different in how they are sold. The PCs wireless
business is a commodity sale and the wireline business is a gradually
declining area with little new technology and stagnant growth. The
management changes have placed all the progressive technology savvy
wireless folks in the background and orders for wireless equipment has
come to almost a complete halt. They are attempting to train the entire
company, the PCS to sell wireline and the wireline to sell PCS. They
have little or no respect for the wireless people as management feels
they are a group of unsophisticated hardware schlockers and they have
failed to realize that the future is in wireless and it has advanced to
a system sale due the advancement of the hi-speed wireless networking
capabilities. The entire move has been one of upheaval and the results
will show in the First Quarter. The entire Transformation process is
currently hopeless within Sprint. Management will not deviate from
corporate levied dictums to consolidate regardless of the consequences.
These managers have been in these positions since the 70's and are
afraid to lose jobs that have comfortable retirements. No one will tell
the King that he has no clothes! The corporate culture is NOT agressive.
It is not a diverse community as most in the ranks are Anglo Saxon or
Jewish. The hours are standard and most people in the employ do not
adhere to any time parameters. They generally come and go as they
please. Dress code is liberal. Sales are required to wear suits for
customer visits but business casual is the general rule. The
advancement and opportunities within the organization is weak and few
progress up the ladder. Many managers come from the outside and few are
promoted from within.
