Candidates are prescreened for excellence in academic performance, but
the tendency is to select people straight out of school - perhaps in an
attempt to keep starting salaries low. The company pays for the
candidate's transportation and lodging. Lodging is at one of the best
hotels in the city. The department structures the candidate screening
process to fill an entire day: I ran a gauntlet of eight interviewers,
including the division head, the department head, and five section
managers. All were relatively gentle and non-intimidating. Most of the
questions asked were about my own personal aspirations for placement and
growth within the company - not terribly difficult if one comes prepared
with the old golden shovel. Only one of the interviewers seriously
delved into my technical knowledge, asking questions about
object-oriented programming specifics.
Upon hire, relocation assistance is provided (including paid travel and
lodging on a dedicated visit, if necessary), and the employee's moving
expenses are paid. A pre-employment drug-screening is required, and the
hiree may also have to submit to a background check for a security clearance.
