The culture at Southern Nuclear is dependent on what location you
visit. The plant environments tend to be more diverse than the
corporate office, simply because the range of job types is larger. The
diversity of our company is increasing, but it is common to hear that
certain people receive promotions or transfers to meet diversity
goals. Whether this is true or not, the perception within the
workforce is not healthy. The upper management is not very diverse at
all, although I expect this will change as recent focus on diversity
has brought in more minority candidates for future promotion. The
hours are not too bad regarding amount of hours, depending on
individual responsibilities, but the early start times can be very
difficult to adjust to. Even after several years, it is not easy to
wake up several hours prior to most people. Additionally, there is NO
attempt on the part of management to offer flex hours such as 4-10s to
alleviate the burden of a typical 1 hour drive (one way) to get to the
plant. The early start combined with lack of flex would be high on my
list of reasons if I were to ever leave the company.
