Overall Sonic is a good company to work for. The benefits are good,
although, they could use some help with the medical and its
deductible. Sonic offers medical, dental, stock options, and room for
advancement.
When a position becomes available, it is posted around the facility and
open for anyone to apply. You will have to interview with the head of
that department and qualify. However, even if you don't qualify and it
is a position that can be learned, they will give you a chance.
We are the corporate offices of 16 automotive dealerships. Sonic owns
others in Houston, but we have run out of room in our building to
accommodate the accounting department, billing, titles, office manager,
assistant controllers, controllers, etc. of the other dealerships. And
that is it. Sonic took off in Houston, and I believe we grew too
fast.
My dealership is rather large, conducting many transactions. We have
also hired a few new people. Training them can be difficult at times.
I have to Inter Office the document to the location, ask the new people
over and over to have a manager's signature on the purchase order, or
to give me a detailed description of what was purchased. Usaully I
will receive the document two weeks later, with no manager's signature,
and no description. Then I have to send emails to supervisors along
with an enclosed copy of my original request and original document.
And when the emails do not work, I have to make phone calls to upper
management.
Processing check requests can take all day. There are days when I
encounter nothing but checks. There may be a new car sale going on
with a trade-in. The trade-in acquires top priority. The dealership
replaces and repairs all that is needed with no expense spared. We
sell a many pre-owned vehicles.
Our service department has free loane cars from Enterprise with luxury
vehicles. We cater to our customers. Overnighting them documents with
enclosed return postage. We offer a coffee bar fully stocked, USA
Today newspapers, and a play area for children. The dealerships are
welcomed to a free lunch provided by Sonic, but not to exceed $250.
At month's end, Sonic provides breakfast, lunch and dinner for its
corporate employees so that we stay and get all the numbers in the
computer.
The corporate offices are located in a rough neighborhood. Every
Monday and Friday when I turn on our street, I see the bright yellow
police tape with "CAUTION POLICE LINE - DO NOT CROSS" strewn across an
apartment door, trees, a cluster of vehicles. Sonic has provided a
security guard until 11:00 pm Monday through Saturday. We have a 10-
foot tall wrought iron fence surrounding the property, survelance
cameras 24-7, and a numeric key pad for security codes to enter the
building. Millions of dollars can come out of there in a day, so Sonic
will sometimes provide escorts to the bank. If it is not crucial to
make a deposit, we will call for an armored truck.
Well, like I said, "Overall, it is a good company." Everyone works
hard and gives it their all, except one lady. 99 percent of us are
willing to help others. The top manager in our office, he is genuine.
He is the kindest, most professioal man I have ever met. He is very
impressive in all his actions...thinking ahead, giving an "at-a-boy"
when it's called for. He recognizes your qualities and your downfalls
and tries to find a medium to aid in those downfalls. He is a true
manager like you have never seen. I want to learn from him as I know
he will teach me. He exceeds all expectations.
