Freedom plus responsibility defines recruiting in our company. You need
to get the job done but nobody is overly concerned about how you do it.
People do not monitor your hours with some kind of logbook. If you want
to take off at 3:00 PM or even Noon on a Friday (jeans casual day)
that's cool. As you can imagine, this makes a great environment for
achievers. That may seem contradictory, but one *earns* the freedom I'm
talking about. In other words, you can't slack off and then work 4
hours every Friday. But if you prove yourself, you're golden.
I have the freedom to determine the how's and what's of my job.
Management does not tell me how to do my job. They respect my knowledge
and give me goals and let me determine how to execute them. I'm in on
the big meetings and am able to say what does and does not work for
recruiting. We talk about strategy and budget and bounce around ideas.
Individual opinions (from all departments) matter and are considered.
The dress code is business casual though I often wear a suit.
Interestingly, people will say "Wow, a suit - do you have interviews
today?," to which I always reply "No. This is what was clean." Nobody
monitors what I wear or why. As long as the image I present is
professional all is good.
In recruiting my role has grown over time. Originally I was hired to
bring on experienced people only. Now I have responsibility for the
college recruiting program, plus experienced hires, plus planning and
budgeting.
All in all I feel I'm in a unique situation: great company, great
management, and a great role. It seems so rare these days.
