The company, a subsidiary of Jefferson Smurfit Group, Ireland is really
only a medium-sized corrugating plant. However, for the island it would
be considered a medium sized company.
The culture is tropicalized transnational culture. We have adapted the
general business methods of a transnational company to the environment
of the Dominican Republic, which is mostly joyous and festive.
Timetables are somewhat flexible, but hard work is required.
The company used to be owned by a local businessman, who ran it since
1939. The company was practically bankrupt when Smurfit took it over.
Production was doubled, payroll halved.
The company would be considered formal by Dominican standards and
liberal by U.s standard. An ideal combination to have a successsful
enterprise in a country like ours/
