Siemens is a vast, atrophied, sclerotic organisation. It is also a very
fragmented organisation. There is very little interaction between
divisions and almost all decisions are made in Germany. Siemens is a
*very* German company. Employees in Germany receive much better
benefits
than employees elsewhere. Speaking German is a definite bonus, although
it is not essential.
I would not recommend working for them except in a senior position.
There is little or no interest in developing individuals and moves
between departments. much less divisions, are neither common nor
encouraged. Opportunities for advancement were zero. This would not be
true in all departments (I worked in Mobile Networks in the UK), but
there are few options for training, promotion, learning new skills,
gaining responsibility. There has been a pay freeze since 2001 in
Mobile
Networks.
Siemens could be a great company if it ever got its head out of the
sand. But it is too cautious and conservative (not in a good way) to do
this. But it is such a large company that there must be good jobs in it
somewhere.
In the UK, dress is generally formal (suits and ties) except on
Fridays.
There are few woman in engineering roles, but more in sales roles.
There
are a fair number of non-white employees. Working hours are flexible,
although there can be some pressure to work long hours and this is
often
required when working on bids.
