I left with a salary around $60,000, good money at the time for one of
my age and rank. Today that would translate to almost six figures I
think.
There were no bonuses of any kind, no stock options. (In the old days
Robbie used to hand people $5 at Christmas.) Of course the higher-ups
get lots of money and bonuses and perks and vendor kickbacks. There
weren't any real perks in my day for middle-management types, except at
the discretion of the department head who OK'ed certain extravagant
entertainment expenses during travel...or if you want to count the
kiddie Holiday party where some eminence grise dressed as Santa or
Clifford, and people brought home-baked cookies. We had partial-
matching 401K, and the vacation policy was generous. Health benefits
were the usual publishing bennies. One had to fight tooth and nail for
halfway decent severence. That anyone should have to fight at all after
as many years' of good and dedicated service as many of us put into that
company says it all about "the company you grew up with." These days I
like to call it, "The company you got used up with."
