Ah, Scholastic. Clifford the Big Red Dog. Baby Sitter's Club.
Goosebumps. Harry Potter. It ain't yer school book fairs and
educational materials company anymore. Nope, Scholastic is riding a
wave of big bucks and glamour, the likes of which would likely have ol'
Robbie Robinson, the company's legendary founder, rolling in his grave.
Scholastic, like all publishing companies, is pretty laid back in terms
of dress codes, hours, personal comportment. They have a wonderful
cafeteria upstairs, in an atrium-like setting on the roof, and there are
good EAP options, sponsored enrichment programs, etc. Scholastic used
to be a great place to advance -- over the years I was promoted several
times on the basis of merit, then dropped like a hot potato -- long
story. Corporate culture has changed from a "family" atmosphere to cut-
throat Big Business. There is no loyalty, you are expendable, without
basis or explanation. Beware!
There used to be a big-dysfunctional-but-happy-family feel about
Scholastic, and when I was there you'd still hear a geezer or two in the
hallway muttering bitterly about "in Robbie's day...." Technically it's
a public company but it is still run by the family that began it and
their inner circle -- they are the majority shareholders. So you always
have to be in favor with the Family, especially the lil' missus, and if
you're not...you're whacked!
