The job offer is non-negotiable in terms of compensation. In fact, the
pay structure is defined all the way through GFE level. The only
variance in compensation between employees in a particular business
segment is in bonus. Pay is very good in comparison with starting
salaries for other entry-level engineering positions. When you consider
bonus, it is possible to earn nearly double what some of your friends
are making after a year or two.
All of the basic benefits are included in the compensation package:
insurance, 401k with matching contributions, profit sharing, pension,
and discount stock purchase plan. The benefits as a whole are merely
adequate, and are only structured to be particularly rewarding to those
who spend many years with the company.
This is one of the few companies that I seen where it is possible to be
promoted and make less money. This was the case for me as I made 75k
(with bonus) in my first full year as a Field Engineer, and received a
base pay "raise" to 50k as a Technical Consultant. This ended up being
a 33% pay cut for me because I was no longer making bonus.
