When I went through the interview process in 2000, there were 3 rounds
for grads in the US. The first round was a campus interview, the second
was in Houston, and the third was in the projected assignment location.
The campus interview was similar to those held by many other employers.
The one difference that I noticed was that the Schlumberger interview
seemed to focus more on other interests besides academics. I later
learned that the recruiters are looking for people with a sense of
adventure who seem to enjoy outdoor activities. The second interview was
a 2-day group interview. There were 3 group activities, an individual
interview, and an impromptu speech in front of the group. On the whole,
it was far more fun than any interview I have ever had. The main
intention of the second round interview was to judge how well you work in
a team environment. The third interview was really a formality meant to
give the prospective employee a taste of the life in the district. This
lasted 2 days, and basically entailed following an engineer on 2 logging
jobs and asking questions. The only real question in the third interview
was how well you fit into the organization.
