In my opinion, the outlook for Schlumberger is mixed. On the one hand,
oil prices are high, which means increased business for all the oilfield
services companies because of the usual increase in E & P activity that
accompanies high prices. On the other hand, Schlumberger has had a poor
track record when it comes to acquisitions, with Sema being the latest
example. Also, it seems that the competition has been catching up to
Schlumberger in terms of technology. This is bad news because it seemed
that the company previously relied on the fact that it was head &
shoulders above Baker, Halliburton, and other smaller service companies
to justify higher prices and get away with substandard customer service.
I don??t think that Schlumberger??s future is in any danger, but I
certainly don??t see it outperforming the rest of the sector any time in
the near future.
