When Sam's Club bought out the wholesale club I worked at,
representatives from Sam's Club came to introduce themselves and gave a
presentation. During this presentation, opportunities for advancement
and wealth were expressed. There was a telling of many people who had
been with WalMart in the early years, and were now millionaires. I am
sure this was true, but the inference was everyone could have such a
success story. These people got in at the beginning of WalMart and were
able to capitalize on that through years of growth. This representation
suggested an enthusiasm for the unattainable.
I worked 40 hours a week prior to Sam's Club taking over, but full time
employment at Sam's is 371/2 hours a week. So from the very beginning I
lost income dollars. Plus the cost of benefits went up.
Although given less hours to perform job duties more work was added to
peoples work loads. Overtime is never allowed and punching out late
could result in verbal and written documentation. So not uncommon was
the use of "comp time". Overtime hours or "comp time", could be taken
at another time with those hours being paid at regular hourly wages.
Every morning prior to opening the doors for business, all "associates"
gathered near the entrance for the morning cheer. Their would be a
leader who hollers out "give me a 'S'!" and the associates would
respond with an 'S!'. Then on to the next letter, until finally Sam's
would be spelled out. The associates were then asked "what's that
spell?", and we would have to yell back "Sam's!". But the leader would
not be satisfied and say "I can't hear you! What's that spell?" So
again we all would yell back "Sam's!". All this was followed with a
round of applause. If you didn't participate in this display of
enthusiasm, you were asked to lead the cheer the next day. This led to
a corrusive environment. An environment where only happy faces were to
be seen and no room for legitimate expression of issues or concerns.
Appropriate expression of issues or concerns were not taken seriously
when offered to management by an hourly, and would label you as
complainer.
