| Ph.D. Candidate - Research Scientist |
I am a PhD candidate in the biomedical sciences at a private university.
Saint Louis University is split up between the undergraduate campus and
the medical school/hospital. I do my research/lab work at the medical
school. The medical school contains laboratories, classrooms, a library,
etc. I work under the mentorship of a professor who writes grant
proposals to the NIH (to obtain government grants (ROIs) for research).
We students do the bench work, amass data, and publish in scientific
journals. The dress code is casual, but we must wear close-toed shoes
and long pants...(it's usually a good idea to wear a lab coat as well).
The atmosphere is a messy combination of excitement when experiments
work, frustration when experiments do not work for months,
collaborations, trouble-shooting, constant learning, stress, and fun.
The hours are generally long, but vary depending on the student's
motivation to finish their degree and on pressure from the professor.
