The CEO of ST has repeatedly asserted that the main strength of ST is
its
staff. In the prolonged and severe down-turn, that we have recently
suffered in the microelectronics industry, the warm and friendly feeling
within the family has become strained at times. The needs for efficiency
and cost-effectiveness have inevitably given a colder feel to the way
that the company interacts with its employees. However, ST remains the
most human and friendly employer on the block, and certainly the best
one
in my experience of paid employment.
The company also holds the respect of the environment as one of the
corner-stones of its mode of operation. Plus, the company attitude to
customers is that they are not customers, but partners. That is, they
only buy our products if those products are useful for helping them to
do business and make money, and so we need to develop those products in
close collaboration with them.
All this makes for the microelectronics company with the highest social
conscience that I know of.
Of course, there are local problems from time to time. My present
situation is not comfortable, and far from ideal. However, the company
is
large and diverse, and I am confident of finding a solution by seeking
an
internal transfer.
