ST has a matrix organization, and is very devolved in its decision
making. This, along with its high-profile social conscience, leads to
advantage over many of the dinosaurs with which it competes, especially
in the increasingly unstable developing regions of the world.
At present, focus is on recruiting in these developing regions, where
salaries are lower. Gradually, though, these areas will rise to the same
sort of cost of living as the developed world, precisely *because* of
the
investment that is being made in them.
It is not clear what will happen after that, to ST, or to any of its
competitors.
The need to economise on the world's use of oil appears to be the next
marketing niche, and one in which ST is already positioning itself to
tackle.
