Project Manager Working at SBC is like working at a huge conglomerate that is too big to know you are there, and about as uncaring toward the individual as you could possibly get. The "Bell System" had a long and proud history of being and treating people like a family. SBC has buried that legacy about as deep as you possibly can. The corporation only cares about profit now, not people, and will swallow you up with projects and expectations until you finally just walk away. For all the billions that it takes in, you would think that at least one of the consultants hired to help guide the company could think of more humane ways of "attiting" people out of the business. Every 4th quarter now, employees go into "death march" mode waiting to see how many pick slips will be handed out for the holiday season. We are divided into four regions (the regions of the four companies from the previous mergers: West/old Pacific Bell region, Southwest/ old Southwestern Bell region, Midwest/ old Ameritech region, and East/old SNET region), and still maintain four seperate cultures while taking direction from San Antonio. Anything bad that happens gets blamed on the leaders in San Antonio. If you want a career opportunity now, you must go through San Antonio. If there is any communication forthcoming, it has to be approved from San Antonio. Most employees find out more about SBC from the local and national newspapers and magazines than they do from our own company. It is still a place that hires from diverse groups, it is still a place that has executives of every race and both genders, but the heart and spirit have left the building and were replaced by sheer corporate greed. It really is sad that we are no longer a big corporate family, especially since our next merger (with AT&T) has already been tauted as "the child buys the parent" and spun with a big ol' corporate smiley face to employees and investors alike.
