The company I work for is approximately 250 people strong. It is a
privately owned company which has locations around the world. Being
part of a privately owned company has been a great experience for me.
Immediately afer I have graduated I started working for this company.
There a many inviduals at this company who have been working there for
over 15+ years. And many who have been working there over 25 years.
This says a lot for the company. My experience with the company has
been very good. My boss recognizes the hard work I put in daily and
has rewarded me fairly during my reviews. I am respected and respect
all individuals in my company and take pride in knowing almost all 250
people on a first name basis. The company is not unionized which has
been great considering I am able to "get my hands" dirty if needed to.
Also, in an ununionized company there is less red tape to deal with.
The company has a real "family" feel to it. Everybody knows everybody.
The corporate culure is SAFETY of its workers first, QUALITY of our
product second, and ON TIME DELIVERY third. Everyone takes pride in
our safety record which at one time was over 5 years without a lost
time injury. We also take pride in our quality of our product. We
boast that although our product may be a little more expensive than our
customers, it least you will only have to by our equipment one time
because it won't fail. We also take pride in going that extra mile for
our customers. We have been know to make spare parts for our products
which are over 30 years old even if we have stopped making this product
and for changing any of our standard products to meet customers needs.
Another part of the culture is the company philosophy with regard to
layoffs. The company does not pay "top dollar" for their employees
like the automotive sector, however they will never layoff a worker.
You job is gauranteed as long as you are doing a good job.
The atmosphere in the company is very diverse. Being a Canadian
company in Toronto, Ontario we are use to being surrounded by many
different ethnic cultures. Some cultures in our company are white
canadian, black canadian, Chinese, African, Carribean, Sri Lankan,
Indian, Vietnamese, Philipino, Italian, Polish, Russian, Czech,
Columbian, Mexican, Maltese, and Portugese.
My working hours are 8:00am to 4:00pm. The company has two shifts,
6:30 am to 3:00 pm (monday to friday) and 4:00 pm to 2:00 am (monday to
thursday).
Dress code is business casual, no ties necessary.
In terms of opportunities for advancement, timing is everything in the
company because of the fact that turnaround is very low. As I
mentioned earlier, it is not uncommon for someone to stay with the
company for over 20 years.
Like all companies, there are some good people and bad, but for the
most part I have learned that if you give someone the respect they
deserve you will also be given this respect in return.
