Prior to Roche buying my employer, Boehringer Mannheim, it was very much
a "boys club." Very few women held positions of authority. That has
changed since Roche purchased Boehringer Mannheim. Some of that
mentality remains, especially in the older male employees. The company
is striving to improve diversity. While we have employees from many
countries, we have very few African American employees. I work fairly
flexible hours, but I always have more work than one person should be
expected to complete. I work a minimum of 50 hours a week, and have
worked 80 hours a week for several months at a time. In the last 2-3
years, Roche has become a do-more-with-less employer. When co-workers
leave to go to other departments or other companies, the work is just
distributed among the rest of us. The dress code is flexible. Most
of us dress business casual with casual Fridays. There are, of course,
times when suits are appropriate. Opportunities for advancement are
few. Typically, people are put into a pay band when they start at the
company and retire in that same band. It seems to be assumed that where
you started is as good as you can do. That should not be the case for
most people.
