QVC is a fast-paced, short-term focused environemnt, focused on moving
as much product as possible. Hitting growth numbers is the primary
focus, and recent stagnation in the domestic business has increased the
level of urgency and stress. QVC is a very white workplace, except in
departments like warehousing and housekeeping. The benefits are very
good, salary mediocre. Although much of the workforce works shifts,
(broadcasting is a 24/7 operation, most others work 2 shifts), QVC does
not provide much support for off-shift workers and behaves like a 9-5
employer. Expect strong demands on your time. Because of the maturity
of the company and the slow growth of the domestic business, there is
virtually no room for advancement beyond entry level positions. QVC has
a set of values called the QVC Difference which you'll hear a lot about
in HR seminars, or perhaps when the business is doing well. It tends to
be deployed sporadically, and usually more as a weapon than a tool.
Departments tend to operate as independent silos, and also tend to be
very protective of the status quo. The result is that change, when it
occurs, happens in violent bursts.
