QVC is the TV shopping leader, and the growth of the international
operations (UK, Germany, Japan) has been outstanding over the last
couple of years, and that trend is expected to continue. Further
international expansion is likely in Asia, and possibly Europe as well.
The base business has saturated the cable market and its growth has
slowed dramatically. In addition, it is becoming increasingly difficult
for QVC to find unique products and distribuition channels. As cable
companies begin converting subscribers to all digital platforms in the
coming years, QVC's base domestic business may take an even larger hit,
which will ratchet up the pressure to increase sales and decrease
costs. However, QVC management is not taking this threat seriously, and
the consequences could be dire. The digital TV transition in the UK led
to several years of decreasing sales. The only question will be whether
the international operations can carry the business.
