I asked my friend, another copywriter, if he'd heard of any job
openings. As it
happened,
he had. He put me in touch with a woman who was leaving Publicis. I
called her
and she
told me she was going to a shop with a better reputation for creative
work. I
listened to
what she had to say about getting good work produced at Publicis, and
called the
woman's boss. The boss, Julie, couldn't be nicer. We immediately hit it
off and
arranged
to meet at the agency. I happened to have an interview at McCann
Erickson, a
competing
agency, the same morning. At McCann, I didn't trust the Creative
Director, who
seemed
egotistical. He'd taken notes about me on my resume, and laid it on the
table.
Naturally,
when he left the room, I read his notes (upside-down) and he'd smugly
jotted
that my
salary request was "probably negotiable." "Not for you, it's not," I
said aloud
as I read the
notes. I went from McCann to Publicis where Julie and her uberboss John
were
friendly,
smart, funny and in love with my portfolio. This helped a lot. In
advertising,
your portfolio
of work is the single most influential piece of why they hire you.
After our
meeting, Julie
and John showed me the office and I left. John called the next day to
make me an
offer. I
happily took it and stayed till I had my first baby.
