Like most ad agencies, Publicis was a creative place with bright,
interesting
employees. A
major variable from agency to agency is the tension level. Things were
less
tense at
Publicis than at my previous agency, J. Walter Thompson. Publicis had a
pool
table and
soft drink machine, frequent Friday afternoon parties and fun, healthy
rapport
between
creative and account sides. My job was to think up arresting ways to
communicate
the
attributes of our clients to consumers, who are trying not to notice,
then write
the words
of the magazine ad or script for the radio commercial or storyboard
dialog for a
TV spot.
It's challenging and fun. The dress code was anything goes, within
reason.
People
generally dressed in jeans and the like until clients were expected,
then they'd
wear
normal business attire. There wasn't much room for advancement at
Publicis in
the
creative department. The two creative directors worked their tails off
and would
be hard
to replace.
Another perk: in 1997, it was lucrative. One got a raise from jumping
from
agency to
agency. These days, the jobs aren't there to jump to. People stay put.
