Providence Health System is a Catholic healthcare system. As such, it
maintains a very humanistic atmosphere in the workplace. To put it
another way, Providence takes care of its employees in a caring and
effective manner. Diversity is encouraged. My current supervisor is an
African-American; previously I have worked with Asian-Americans and
Hispanics. The hours are "standard business hours," at least in the
areas where I work. But the emphasis is more on getting the work done,
not just punching the clock. Particularly on Fridays, I am almost
ordered to leave a little early. That tells me that I am cared about
and for by my employer. The dress code is a bit stricter than in some
other places I have worked. No denim is allowed, no t-shirts.
Otherwise, a business casual style is the norm. My supervisor makes me
aware of seminars and workshops that will allow me to improve my
existing job skills and acquire new ones. She also encourages me to
attend. On the reverse side, when my a department in which I previously
worked had to downsize my position out of existence, I was assured that
I still had a job. I was maintained on the payroll in an on-call pool
with no lose of hours or pay until a new permanent position was found
for me. That's support of the employee above and beyond the call.
