P&G is a good company to start a career. The first year is a steep
learning curve, as there is no structured induction program (at least
there wasn't one for my function) and you are thrown immediately into
the deep end. After 1 month in the company, I was rolling out an IT
solution in all offices in Europe, which required knowledge of system
development, project management, accounting, P&G policies, training &
negotiation skills... and only had an MSc in an unrelated discipline:-
).
The good point is the assignment-based career, with a contant change of
2 year assignments in different business units, this means you will
never be stuck in a boring job for too long. If you want to progress in
the Finance function, you are expected to take assignments in budget
control, cash management, profit forecasting, cost accounting, etc., to
get all-round finance skills. In addition, career progression usually
implies becoming a people manager. There is, apparently, a career path
for those who want to become experts/specialists rather then managers,
but you don't see that too much in reality. Overall culture is relaxed.
My office is always empty by 6pm, and staying overnight/on weekends is
virtually unheard of. That may vary slightly office by office, as HQ
such as Geneva are more competitive.
