The company expects employees to keep a reasonable forty hour week.
The dress code is relaxed, as is the work environment. But a laid back
office is not always a good thing, and managers are 100 percent
tolerant of harrassment, agressive behavior, and interoffice
bickering. Advancement opportunities are there, though one must be
pushy (and, in many cases, male) to get promoted. The company prefers
to increase responsibility without increasing pay. The company invests
little money or effort in employee comfort. Editors work on
refurbished, ten-year old computers, office space is crowded, and
maintenance is poor. Tension between departments and other office
groups is high. Salaries are very, very low for the industry, making
vacancies difficult to fill. In the DC metro area, a recent college
grad with 1-2 years experience can expect to start at about $23,000.
Lower-mid to mid-level positions requiring 5-10+ years experience
and/or a graduate degree start at about $27,000. Company does not
give year-end bonuses. Raises are about 3 percent a year. If you are
good, then 4 percent.
